What Is GenX

A few years back, it was revealed a chemical plant located south of Gray's Creek NC (Chemours) was legally dumping a by-product into the nearby Cape Fear river. They had been doing this for years and their was no need for panic, until there was. Recently, it has been proven that high levels of GenX (PFAS) can be harmful to humans. This substance is an unregulated chemical that is produced when developing non-stick products like teflon coated pots and pans. What's more surprising is the shear amount of products that this chemical is found in that we use everyday. A recent conversation with a chemist revealed that this product is found in pizza delivery boxes, rain jackets, pop-corn bags, etc. What's more is that ingesting this chemical is excess would of 140 parts per trillion would take over 100 years to have negative health effects. My reply is that living over 100 years is a health effect in itself.  People that are most impacted live within a certain radius of the plant and tend to have well water. While there are no longterm studies on this product it is recommended that those impacted use caution. To do this, they can contact Chemours for a free water test or hire an independent firm to test the water and do so at least once a year. If higher than goal levels are found, Chemours will install filtration systems free of charge to mitigate exposure. They also offer free bottled water to those affected. My question is how safe is bottled drinking water, which is produced from municipal water sources as well. That's a whole other blog post though. Attached is the disclosure we provide to our clients, along with good sources to do your research
